Sowore, Lawyers Join Forces to Escort Targeted NYSC Member, Ushie Rita, in Lagos

Human Rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, accompanied by a team of Human Rights lawyers, arrived in Lagos to support Ushie Rita, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member.

Rita was threatened and summoned by NYSC officials following her criticism of Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu.

Sowore, along with attorneys Festus Ogun, Adeyinka Oyesomi, and Ojienoh Justice, seeks to defend Rita’s right to free speech and stand against alleged intimidation by authorities.

In a short video which Sowore posted on his social media page, himself and the lawyers met Ushie Rita, to convey to her Local Government Inspector who had summoned her over comment about the poor performance of the President.

“The journey with National Youth Service Corps youth Corper, Ushie Rita uguamaye, has commenced in Lagos. She is scheduled to appear before the LGI today and we will escort her to their offices. We are all en route with attorneys. Festus Ogun, Adeyinka Oyesomi, Ojienoh Justice.” Sowore posted.

Recall that Ushie Rita, a serving Corp member in Lagos State cried out over a threat she received from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) board following her recent social media post in which she expressed her displeasure about the rising costs of commodities in the country.

Subsequently, she was summoned by her LGI over her comments about the President of Nigeria.

However, Sowore and other bold voices in Nigeria, including a former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar have vowed to ensure that Rita is not victimized for “saying the truth.”
